BACKGROUND Clove has been used in the natural health world for centuries. It was listed in Hildegard's Medicine, a compilation of early German medicines by highly regarded Benedictine Herbalists, Hildegard of Bingen (1098-1179).

Native to the Maluku Islands of Indonesia, the clove tree is a tropical evergreen species that produces thousands of small, fragrant flower buds. These buds are harvested when they ripen to a deep red color, then dried and steam distilled to produce Clove essential oil.

Healers in China and India have used clove buds since ancient times as part of their treatments for various needs – stomach issues, heart needs, emotions, and more.. Eugenol, cloves' principal constituent, was used in the dental industry for years to numb gums and ease dental discomfort.

CLOVE & THE IMMUNE SYSTEM Clove bud (Syzygium aromaticum) essential oil is a commonly studied defender against many strains of bacteria (a quick PubMed search will show you lots of great studies!).

Clove bud essential oil is composed primarily (80+%) of the molecule Eugenol. Eugenol is a potent defender against numerous harmful bacteria. The Eugenol molecule loves to hang around moist surfaces. Clove bud oil also contains about 10% of a related molecule Eugenyl acetate – also a strong defender against bacteria.

Clove was a primary ingredient of the “Four Thieves Vinegar” which protected bandits who rummaged the homes and graves of the dead during the black plague. This recipe is the basis for our beloved Thieves Essential Oil Blend!

Clove essential is also loaded with powerful antioxidants, such as polyphenols. Antioxidants are a huge bolster to health since so much of our modern life can create oxidative stress in the body. In a study that compared the antioxidant activity of 26 spices, cinnamon wound up as the clear winner, even outranking “superfoods” like garlic and oregano! Antioxidants also help support the body's response to inflammation, which plays a role in almost all chronic diseases.

Clove is a key ingredient in the Longevity Essential Oil Blend and the Longevity supplement -- a great choice for overall wellness and promoting longevity!

KEY CONSTITUENTS *Constituents are naturally occurring compounds in plants (and therefore essential oils) that give them specific health-supporting properties Eugenol, Eugenyl acetate

CLOVE & EMOTIONS In Chinese medicine there are fascinating theories around using herbs with certain properties to balance the body. Conditions are categorized by influences such as cold vs. heat. Imbalance of “cold” relates to stiffness, decreased energy and vitality, lethargy, and congested flow of all of the body's fluids.

Clove and Cinnamon Bark are herbs of warmth that bring an invigorating energy into our organs and immune system. Clove is a powerful antioxidant, making it supportive of the heart, lungs, and digestive system, increasing movement when these systems are weakened.
